Meet Our Team

The surgeons and staff at The Baricenter at The Laparoscopic Surgical Center of New York are committed to providing the highest level of weight loss surgical care using their skills combined with the latest techniques and technologies in minimally invasive surgery.

While our office is located at 1010 5th Avenue near the corner of 82nd street, the surgical procedures are performed at the Mount Sinai Hospital on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, both ambulatory and overnight.

Brian Jacob, MD: Director of The Baricenter. Dr. Jacob completed his general surgery training at Mount Sinai Hospital and his fellowship in bariatric surgery at Columbia University and Weill-Cornell University under the mentorship of Drs. Michel Gagner, Alfons Pomp, and Marc Bessler. During this time, he developed an expertise, both clinically and academically, in weight loss surgery.

Certified by the American Board of Surgery, he is also a member of the ASBS, SAGES, and ACS. He is the author and co-author of numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and he has given multiple presentations at national and international conferences on topics that include both weight loss surgery as well as general surgery. Above all, he is dedicated to providing the highest quality of care for his patients.

Psychologist: Deborah Vineberg, Psy.D. graduated magna cum laude from Middlebury College with a BA in Psychology in 1994. She went on to obtain her Doctorate in Psychology at the University of Denver in 1998. She completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. As a licensed psychologist, she worked for 5 years at The Massachusetts General Hospital Weight Center, a clinic for surgical and non-surgical weight loss. Most recently she was the Director of Psychological Services at the Center for Weight Reduction Surgery at Montefiore Medical Center. Dr. Vineberg also has a private practice.

Psychologist: Christine Megan, Ph.D., R.N. can be reached at 212-692-9288.

Nutritionist: Amy Fleishman, MS, RD, CDN. Amy provides nutritional counseling to patients before and after weight loss surgery. After completing a BS degree in Nutrition at Cornell University, she completed a dietetic internship at Albert Einstein Medical Center. She then obtained her Masters Degree in Clinical Nutrition from New York University. She is currently certified as a Registered Dietitian and Certified Dietitian Nutritionist. She is a member of both the American Dietetic Association and the New York State Dietetic Association. She is an associate member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery.

Exercise Physiologist: Mary Jane Detroyer, MS, RD, CDN. Mary Jane Detroyer is a Registered Dietitian and Exercise Physiologist who has been working in the health and fitness industry for 20 years. She holds a MS in Nutrition and Applied Physiology from Columbia University and a BA in Movement Science from Hunter College. She is certified by A.C.E. as a Personal Trainer and has experience working one-on-one with clients in corporations, fitness centers and client’s homes. Her mission is to motivate and empower her clients to improve their health and quality of life through simple exercise, diet and lifestyle changes. She has a private practice in New York City specializing in nutrition and exercise for Women’s Wellness, Diabetes, Heart Disease and Weight Management.

Fitness Therapy™: Jude Milner, MA, LCSW, CPT. Fitness Therapy™ is an innovative program that combines psychotherapy and exercise. Jude’s focus is to help you reintegrate back into your changing body as you build muscle awareness, physical and emotional health. She is a clinical psychotherapist, specializing in the treatment of compulsive overeating and weight loss surgery patients. Jude is also an exercise physiologist who has had gastric bypass surgery. A frequent speaker at professional conferences, patient seminars and workshops, she is on the executive board of The Center for the Study of Anorexia and Bulimia, on the advisory panel of WLS Lifestyles magazine, and the author of Fat Free: The All True Adventures of SuperSize Woman, (Penguin/Tarcher Books 2006) a graphic autobiography. Jude’s practice includes psychological evaluations, individual and group psychotherapy and Fitness Therapy™ sessions.

Practice Manager: Edna Bartolome. . Graduated with a BS degree in food and nutrition in 1978 from Manilla, Philippines, Edna moved to the United States in 1981. She had completed multiple courses specializing in billing and coding, and in addition has specialty training in phlebotomy and cardiac testing (EKG, Echo, Stress Tests). Stella will oversee all of the operations related to The Baricenter at the Laparoscopic Surgical Center of New York.

Patient Liason: Ida Jimenez. Graduated from New York University mastering in Political Science in 1976, Ida then proceeded to Long island University where she completed courses in CPT and ICD-9 coding, DRG, as well as medical billing. Since 1980, she has been an asset to various surgical practices in facilitating the processes of scheduling and coding. At the Baricenter, she is a vital liaison between our patients and the insurance approval process.

Reimbursement and Insurance Specialist: Edna Bartolome. Graduated with a BS degree in food and nutrition in 1978 from Manilla, Philippines, Edna moved to the United States in 1981. She had completed multiple courses specializing in billing and coding, and in addition has specialty training in phlebotomy and cardiac testing (EKG, Echo, Stress Tests). Stella will oversee all of the operations related to The Baricenter at the Laparoscopic Surgical Center of New York.
